I don't know if this is official from the post office or anything, but I've always assumed that letters take two days to get anywhere in the country.
California to Maine, where I live, usually takes 2-3 days, but I've had it occasionally take a week or more for mail to go across the state.
Years ago in California, our mailman (the relief guy) just tossed the mail he didn't feel like delivering. I lost a full month's worth of bills that way. Back then, stop payments were $20 each at my bank. Painful!
